Athlete Interview: Max Wayne, Cannons Lacrosse Club

Featured Athlete | Premier Lacrosse League

Athletes,

We know, we know, we’re a day late from our regularly scheduled programming of bringing you a team’s playlist every Wednesday this summer. However, we have a good reason, we promise. For the first time in The Warm-Up’s history, we are bringing you a new segment, Athlete Interviews. Athlete Interviews will give you a peak behind the scenes of what your favorite high school, college, and professional athletes are listening to before they compete.

For our very first featured athlete, we were able to sit down with Max Wayne. Max is a close defenseman for the Premier Lacrosse League’s Cannons Lacrosse Club who got his first professional start this past Friday against the Chrome Lacrosse Club. The Cannons beat the Chrome 14-13, and Max tallied four ground balls and one caused turnover. Check out our interview below:

MAX WAYNE INTERVIEW

TWU: Right out of the gates, if you had to pick one song to listen to five minutes before every game for the rest of your lacrosse career, what would it be?

TWU: What’s your style for your pre-game music? Are you listening to other peoples’ playlists? Putting your own on shuffle? Mixing it up from game to game?

MW: I like to listen to more intense music that’s borderline sad. Putting my music on the team speaker would definitely ruin everyone else's vibe. I have my own playlist that I update every once in a while.

TWU: What’s the atmosphere like in the Cannons locker room? Is everyone headphones in listening to their own music, or is there music playing over a speaker? (or both)

MW: Most guys on the team are jamming to the speaker. There are a few guys that have their headphones in, myself being one of them.

TWU: Who is the “music guy” on the team? To put it differently, if you had to pick one guy to play his music before the game, who would you pick?

MW: Marcus Holman is usually on the speaker. He plays upbeat EDM and Rap music that most of the guys vibe to pre-game.

TWU: Who is in charge of making the Cannons’ pre-game warm-up?

MW: Holman I think? He put a playlist in the group chat we can add to. I haven’t touched it so I’m not sure if that’s what’s playing in the locker room.

TWU: Besides listening to music, do you have any other pre-game rituals or superstitions?

MW: Tons. I have a rolling out routine, mobility routine, specific pregame diet, I like to watch some highlights of myself and teammates before the game, and get a few minutes of meditation in.

TWU: How has the jump been for you from DIII to playing in the pros?

MW: It’s been a big jump for sure, but maybe not as big as most people would think. Coach Thompson did a great job recruiting a ton of talent at CNU and also making sure we were playing the toughest competition.

TWU: Awesome. Thank you man and best of luck to you and the team the rest of the season!
